My custom ROM experience

I am pretty new to custom Android distributions, mostly running them on devices with half-broken unofficial builds of Lineage or something similar. In summer 2025, I bought a Motorola edge 30 fusion because it has an official build of LineageOS. I have been using it as a daily driver since then.

23.2

When this update came out I was not expecting much, honestly. I figured it would be another incremental update with the usual bug fixes and security patches. Boy, was I wrong.

The first thing I noticed after flashing the update was how smooth everything felt. Animations are buttery smooth, app switching is snappy, and overall the system just feels more refined. It’s the kind of polish that you don’t really notice until you experience it.

One of the biggest improvements for me is the camera. Motorola’s camera hardware is decent but the software has always been hit or miss. LineageOS 23.2 brings a much better camera implementation and the results speak for themselves - sharper photos, better low-light performance, and faster shutter speeds.

The battery life has also improved noticeably. I can easily get through a full day of heavy usage now, which was not always the case with previous builds. The way Android 14 handles background processes in this version is just more efficient.

What I like

  • Clean, bloat-free experience
  • Regular security updates
  • Great performance optimization
  • Active community and development
  • Privacy-focused features built in

What could be better

Nothing is perfect, of course. The only minor thing I’d like to see is more device-specific optimizations out of the box. Some features like NFC payments work but require a bit of manual configuration. Then again, that’s part of the fun of running custom ROMs - you get to tinker.

Final thoughts

If you’re on the fence about trying LineageOS, just do it. The installation process is well documented and the community is incredibly helpful. Yes, you lose some manufacturer-specific features, but the trade-off is worth it for a cleaner, more secure, and overall better Android experience.

I’m genuinely impressed with how far custom ROMs have come. What used to be a niche hobby for tech enthusiasts is now a viable option for everyday users who want more control over their devices. LineageOS 23.2 is proof of that progress.

This update alone made me confident in my decision to go with a device that has official LineageOS support. Looking forward to seeing what the next versions bring.
